History of Sugar Mill

The first recorded owner of the land to become known as Sugar Mill Country Club (the “Club”) was Jose Boney.Local hunters enjoyed the area where deer, wild pigs and wild turkeys roamed the woods until the Club opened on New Year’s Day in 1970.

The late Joe Lee, Golf Course Architect, designed the course with two nine-hole courses:  Red and White.  The starting hole #1 was on the Red Course for two reasons: (1) Joe liked to start with a par five when the land was available, and (2) the Golf Shop was originally closeby.  The White Course was the back nine.

Joe Lee lived nearby, and he would come to Sugar Mill and drive a cart around the courses.  He’s quoted as saying “The Sugar Mill design gave him more notoriety than any other course he designed.”

The Club was subsequently purchased by a gentleman from Texas, and finally the membership bought the Club.  In 1984, the Blue Course was planned and developed.  Again, Joe Lee was the designer.

To help with putting practice, the large green was added next to the office and parking lot to service the Blue Course. In 2015, the Blue Course underwent a complete overhaul.  The fairways, tees and approaches were removed and replaced with the following new grasses:
Tees & Fairways – Celebration Bermuda
Approaches – Tiff Grande Bermuda
Collars – Tiff Grande Bermuda was spread over the old, then watered, sanded and closed for development until it was reopened on October 5, 2015.

Sugar Mill Country Club sits at the highest point in all of Volusia County, offering some of the most breathtaking views from every direction and is a distinctive piece of New Smyrna Beach.
